A good music publishing house has the knowledge and contacts to promote a song or composition. Typically, a publishing house enters into an agreement with the songwriter under which the songwriter entrusts the publisher with ownership and control of his songs in part, in exchange for a percentage of the revenue generated by the exploitation of those songs. A serious publishing house never collects a fee for its service. For more information, see SOCAN`s Publishing 101 in the Creators Toolbox.

For music creators, membership is free when they apply online. For music publishers, there is a one-time processing fee for membership of 50 $US (plus taxes incurred).
